BackEU to limit Chinese hybrid vehicle imports to 350,000 a year

Original reporting
The European Commission announced that from next year the EU will restrict the number of hybrid electric vehicles imported from China to 350,000 units per year. The measure follows a rapid rise in Chinese‑made hybrids, with estimates that around 800,000 battery‑electric and plug‑in hybrid models will be sold in the bloc this year. By applying a quota under World Trade Organization rules, Brussels aims to cut the Chinese share of the hybrid market to roughly 3 percent, roughly half its current level. The plan has received backing from Volkswagen’s chief executive, who says it will help strengthen Europe’s domestic automotive industry. Officials said the quota can be implemented quickly and is intended to protect EU manufacturers while supporting climate goals.
