The UK Home Secretary, Shabana Mahmood, announced on Monday that security arrangements for high‑profile public figures will be urgently reviewed following the murder of former MP Ann Widdecombe. Mahmood said the review will cover politicians, members of the royal family, former MPs, party leaders who are not currently MPs, peers, former members of devolved parliaments and party spokespeople. All of these individuals will be offered police protection as part of the new measures. The Home Secretary emphasized the need to defend against “threats from without and within that target our democracy.” The announcement comes amid heightened concerns about the safety of public officials after Widdecombe’s killing.
